Vintge Motorcycle Restoration

May 2020 - August 2020

Background

In the summer of 2020, I found myself with extra time on my hands due to the pandemic, and not many places to go other than my garage and local roads. So, I bought a 1981 Honda CB750C as a project. It was rusty, didn’t run, and needed serious mechanical work to be roadworthy again. So, I picked up a welder and some wrenches and got to work.

Restoration Process

The work began with a teardown of major components, including the gas tank and fenders (which were repaired and repainted), the ignition system, the rear frame subassembly, the electrical system and the braking system. Component by component, I went through the assemblies and rebuilt or replaced anything that was worn or not working. Major steps in this process were:

Use Case

This project served largely as a source of learning and entertainment for me. I enjoyed getting hands-on and jumping into things I had little idea how to do. There is not much of a typical engineering use case here, but I plan on keeping this motorcycle and continuing to ride and maintain it.

Current State

As of 2/1/2024, the restoration has been completed. The motorcycle runs and has passed inspection. More importantly, I think it looks pretty dang good going down the road, and is quite a fun experience to ride.

Next Steps

Although this project is complete, I will likely always want to continue to modify and upgrade the motorcycle, and I would like to complete an overhaul of the wiring and gauges next. Eventually, I'd like to do an entire engine rebuild and clean up the aluminum.
